We would like to take this opportunity to warmly WELCOME you to the St. Francis de Sales parish family.
Our parish was founded in 1948 and has steadily grown into the largest of the five Catholic parishes in the greater Muskegon area. Our purpose is summed up in our mission statement.
We, the faith community of St. Francis de Sales Parish,
in the Roman Catholic tradition, dedicate ourselves to living
the gospel of Jesus Christ. We go forth, empowered by
the Holy Spirit, sustained by the Eucharist and prayer,
to make God's presence a living reality in our community and our world.
It is our hope that you will come to experience St. Francis de Sales Parish as your spiritual home through your worshipping with us and through your participation in the life of the parish community.
It is our hope by visiting our website you will find out more about WHO we are and WHAT we are about. If at any time we can better help you to be a fully active member, please do not hesitate to call the parish office and speak to a member of the pastoral staff.
Parish History
The structure is the second church building for the parish of St. Francis de Sales. The original church is located across the street and was built two years after the parish was founded in 1948.
The current Church building was designed by the internationally famous architect, Marcel Breuer, who was commissioned as architect in 1961. The ground breaking took place on May 3, 1964, with work beginning on June 1, 1964. The cornerstone was blessed on June 8, 1966. The contractor was M.A. Lombard and Son of Chicago, Illinois, one of the foremost builders in the country, skilled in the use of poured concrete construction.
The first Mass was celebrated in this building on December 18, 1966. It was dedicated by Bishop Alan J. Babcock on September 23, 1967.
